Shades of Memories (1996 – 2026) is a series of paintings created over thirty years with more than sixty portraits that capture different stages, events and emotions Hyun experienced in her life. They portray impactful personal moments in a woman’s life, including marriage and motherhood, as well as explore larger shared issues, such as the prolonged feelings of dislocation, anxiety and tension that an immigrant often face, particularly in America. The autobiographical portrayals that shape this series show a reflection of a woman artist’s self discovery interwoven with vulnerability and resilience.
Hyun Higbie exhibited her works in Korea and the United States including Han Sun Galley (Seoul), Gallery Agbe (Gwangu), David Winton Rell Gallery (Providence), Fuller Museum of Art (Brockton), the Harriet Tubman Gallery (Boston) and the Mario Diacono Gallery (Boston).
